Insert molding is a processes that is unique to injection molding. Metal inserts such as threaded bolts and nuts or complex custom metal pieces can be molded over and captured by the plastic. This process creates some very useful parts. Inserts can add stiffness, mounting/fastening details or cosmetic and functional features. Examples of this process can be found in eye glasses with the stiffeners in the frames, thumb tacks or tools such as screw driver handles just to name a few.
Below we highlight just one way of utilizing a two part mold to create a rubber mounting foot with a 10-32 screw protruding from the rubber.
